Etsy Fees
Know your costs before you sell.
Etsy's fee structure is more complex than most marketplaces. Between listing fees, transaction fees, payment processing, and optional advertising, it's easy to lose track of what you're actually paying. Here's the complete breakdown for 2026.
Listing Fee: $0.20 Per Item
Every item you list costs $0.20. This fee applies:
- When you first create the listing
- Every 4 months when the listing auto-renews
- Each time an item sells (if you have quantity > 1)
- When you relist an expired listing
If you list 100 items, that's $20 in listing fees before you sell anything. These fees add up, especially with auto-renewal.
Transaction Fee: 6.5%
When your item sells, Etsy takes 6.5% of the total order amount. This includes:
- Item price
- Shipping cost you charge the buyer
- Gift wrap charges (if applicable)
On a $50 item with $5 shipping, the transaction fee is $3.58 (6.5% of $55).
Payment Processing Fee: 3% + $0.25
Etsy Payments (required for most sellers) charges 3% + $0.25 per transaction. This covers credit card processing.
On that same $55 sale: $1.65 + $0.25 = $1.90 in payment processing.
Payment processing rates vary by country. US sellers pay 3% + $0.25. UK sellers pay 4% + £0.20. Check Etsy's fee page for your country.
Total Mandatory Fees
Let's add it up for a US seller on a $50 item + $5 shipping:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee (6.5%): $3.58
- Payment processing (3% + $0.25): $1.90
- Total fees: $5.68
- Percentage of sale: 10.3%
So Etsy takes roughly 10-12% of each sale in mandatory fees. But there's more...
Offsite Ads Fee: 12-15%
This is the fee that catches sellers off guard. Etsy advertises your listings on Google, Facebook, and other platforms. If a buyer clicks one of these ads and purchases within 30 days, you pay an additional fee:
- Shops under $10,000/year in sales: 15% (optional - you can opt out)
- Shops over $10,000/year in sales: 12% (mandatory - cannot opt out)
If you made over $10,000 on Etsy last year, you cannot opt out of Offsite Ads. A sale from an offsite ad on that $55 order would add $6.60 in fees.
Etsy Ads (Optional)
Etsy Ads are on-platform advertising you control. You set a daily budget and Etsy promotes your listings in search results. You pay per click, not per sale.
Cost varies by category and competition. You can start with $1/day and scale up. Unlike Offsite Ads, these are completely optional.
Currency Conversion Fee: 2.5%
If you receive payment in a currency different from your listing currency, Etsy charges 2.5% for conversion. International sellers or those with multiple currency listings need to factor this in.
Regulatory Operating Fee
Some countries require Etsy to charge an additional regulatory fee. This ranges from 0.25% to 1.1% depending on location. US sellers don't currently pay this fee.
Real Example: What Etsy Actually Takes
Let's look at a realistic sale for a US seller:
- Item price: $40
- Shipping charged: $6
- Total sale: $46
Standard fees:
- Listing fee: $0.20
- Transaction fee: $2.99
- Payment processing: $1.63
- Total: $4.82 (10.5% of sale)
If the sale came from an Offsite Ad (12%):
- Add: $5.52
- New total: $10.34 (22.5% of sale)
That Offsite Ad fee can nearly double your costs. Keep this in mind when pricing.
How to Reduce Etsy Fees
- Opt out of Offsite Ads if you're under $10,000/year - The option is in Shop Manager > Marketing > Offsite Ads
- Price your items to cover the potential 12-15% Offsite Ad fee if you can't opt out
- Avoid unnecessary renewals by pricing to sell the first time
- Combine shipping - Multiple items in one order mean one payment processing fee
- Don't over-rely on Etsy Ads unless you're tracking ROI carefully
Etsy Fees vs Other Platforms
- Etsy: 10-12% (up to 22%+ with Offsite Ads)
- eBay: ~14% total
- Poshmark: 20% (flat rate)
- Mercari: 10%
Etsy's base fees are competitive, but the mandatory Offsite Ads for larger sellers can make it expensive.
Summary
Etsy fees are: $0.20 listing + 6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 payment processing. That's roughly 10-12% of each sale. If you're over $10,000/year, add up to 12% more for mandatory Offsite Ads.
Factor these costs into your pricing from day one. A $40 item might net you $35 normally - or under $30 if it came through an offsite ad.
