eBay Fees
Know exactly what eBay charges.
eBay's fee structure can be confusing. Insertion fees, final value fees, per-order fees, category rates - it adds up. This guide breaks down exactly what eBay charges sellers in 2026 and how to minimize your costs.
Insertion Fees (Listing Fees)
Insertion fees are what eBay charges just to list an item. Good news: most sellers get plenty of free listings.
- First 250 listings per month: FREE
- After 250 listings: $0.35 per listing
- Classified ads: $9.95 for 30 days
Note: Insertion fees are non-refundable, even if your item doesn't sell. If you relist an item, you may be charged again.
Final Value Fees
This is the main fee eBay charges when your item sells. It's a percentage of the total sale amount (item price + shipping).
Standard Rate (Most Categories)
- 13.6% on the first $7,500 of the sale
- 2.35% on any amount over $7,500
Per-Order Fee
- Orders $10.00 or less: $0.30 per order
- Orders over $10.00: $0.40 per order
Category-Specific Final Value Fees
Some categories have different rates. Here are the main ones:
- Books, DVDs, Music: 15.3% (up to $7,500)
- Jewelry & Watches: 15% (up to $5,000), then 9%
- Coins & Bullion: 13.6% (up to $7,500), then 7%
- Athletic Shoes ($150+): 8% (no per-order fee)
- Musical Instruments & Gear: 6.35%
- Heavy Equipment: 3%
Always check eBay's fee page for your specific category. Rates can change, and some subcategories have different fees.
eBay Store Subscription Fees
eBay Store subscriptions give you more free listings and lower final value fees. Here's the breakdown:
- Starter: $4.95/month - 250 free listings
- Basic: $21.95/month - 1,000 free listings, lower fees
- Premium: $59.95/month - 10,000 free listings
- Anchor: $299.95/month - 25,000 free listings
- Enterprise: $2,999.95/month - Unlimited listings
Store subscribers typically save 0.5-2% on final value fees depending on category and tier.
Additional Fees to Know
International Fee
If you sell internationally without using eBay International Shipping: 1.65% additional fee on the item price.
Currency Conversion Fee
If you receive payment in a different currency: 3% conversion charge.
Dispute Fee
If a buyer opens a case that's decided in their favor: $20 dispute fee.
Below Standard Seller Fee
If your seller rating drops to 'Below Standard': Additional 6% on all final value fees until you improve.
Optional Listing Upgrades
eBay offers optional features that cost extra:
- Bold title: $2.00-$4.00
- Subtitle: $1.50-$6.00
- Reserve price: $5.00 or 7.5% of reserve (max $250)
- International site visibility: $0.10-$0.50
Promoted Listings
Promoted Listings is eBay's advertising platform. You set an ad rate (typically 2-20% of sale price), and only pay when someone buys through the ad.
This is optional but can significantly increase visibility for competitive items.
Real Example: What eBay Takes
Let's say you sell a jacket for $50 with $10 shipping ($60 total):
- Final value fee (13.6%): $8.16
- Per-order fee: $0.40
- Total fees: $8.56
- You keep: $51.44
That's about 14.3% of the sale going to eBay fees.
How to Reduce eBay Fees
- Stay within your free listings - Don't list more than 250 items unless you have a store
- Consider a store subscription - If you're listing 500+ items, the math often works out
- Keep your seller rating high - Below Standard sellers pay 6% extra on everything
- Use eBay International Shipping - Avoid the 1.65% international fee
- Offer free shipping and build it into the price - Final value fee applies to shipping anyway
- Avoid unnecessary listing upgrades - Bold titles rarely justify the cost
eBay Fees vs Other Platforms
How does eBay compare?
- eBay: ~14% total (including per-order fee)
- Poshmark: 20% (flat rate)
- Mercari: 10% selling fee
- Etsy: ~12% (listing + transaction + payment processing)
eBay is competitive, especially for higher-priced items where that $7,500 threshold kicks in.
Summary
eBay fees typically total 12-15% of your sale price. The main components are the final value fee (13.6% for most items) and the per-order fee ($0.30-$0.40). Store subscriptions can lower these costs if you sell enough volume.
Always factor fees into your pricing. If you buy something for $10, you'll need to sell it for at least $25-30 after fees and shipping to make a reasonable profit.
